Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from International Cricket

Australian star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to an outstanding career in the ODI, T20I, List A and first-class formats.

The 38-year-old had already stepped away from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in June last year and has now decided to retire from T20 International cricket as well. However, he will continue playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) for Melbourne Stars, with his contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season.

Maxwell finishes his T20I career with 2,897 runs in 130 matches at an impressive strike rate of over 154. He is Australia's third-highest run-scorer in the format and scored five T20I centuries, sharing the world record with India's Rohit Sharma.

Speaking on *The Final Word* podcast, Maxwell revealed that discussions about his international future had been ongoing for some time, both before and after the T20 World Cup.

He also admitted that he had hoped to receive a farewell match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), his home venue, during England's upcoming white-ball tour. However, he understands Australia's decision to focus on building a younger squad ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

Maxwell acknowledged that the next 12 to 24 months will bring significant changes to the Australian team, giving younger players opportunities to gain international experience and prepare for future challenges.

Although his international career has come to an end, fans will continue to see the explosive Australian star in action for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.
