ChatGPT Go Launches Globally: OpenAI Makes AI Affordable by Betting on Ads

OpenAI ChatGPT Go

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Go globally, making its affordable subscription plan available in all markets where ChatGPT is available. The plan costs $8 per month in the US, positioned between the free tier and the $20 per month ChatGPT Plus subscription. ChatGPT Go was first introduced in India in August 2025 and later expanded to over 170 countries.
ChatGPT Go gives users access to GPT-5.2 Instant, OpenAI 's faster and lighter model. This plan includes significantly higher usage limits than the free tier, including more messages, file uploads, and image creation. OpenAI hasn't shared exact figures for these limits, but has stated that Go offers ten times more permissions than the free plan. ChatGPT Go also includes a longer context window and better memory support than the free version.

OpenAI has confirmed that it will begin testing ads in the free and Go tiers in the US. The ads will appear below ChatGPT's answers and will be clearly labeled as "sponsored." The company has stated that advertisers cannot influence the chatbot's answers and it will not share user conversations with advertisers. Ads will not appear alongside content related to sensitive or regulated topics, and users under 18 will not see the ads.

CEO Sam Altman said the rollout of ads is to help OpenAI keep ChatGPT affordable. He acknowledged past criticism of ads, but said the approach is necessary to make AI accessible to more people without high fees. Altman explained that OpenAI will draw inspiration from Instagram's advertising experience for this format.

ChatGPT Plus and Pro users will continue to enjoy an ad-free experience. OpenAI said it will monitor feedback and make adjustments as ad testing progresses. The company reported strong adoption of ChatGPT Go in earlier markets and expects the global launch to further increase usage.

In related news, OpenAI is reportedly planning AI-powered SweetPea earbuds, which could make them a potential alternative to Apple's AirPods.
